I remember the best part of my childhood was going to my grandparents farm in South West of Manitoba Pembina Valley area. It was and still is the prettiest town in a valley. The lake was right in the middle of the valley and the little farming town and hills surrounding it. In the fall was the best part of going there because the trees reflected on the still lake and it was and is one of the most beautiful place God created.
The most I think I can remember is my Grandmother in the kitchen baking and cooking and being out in her gardens. Syrup came from a Rodgers can, eggs came from the chickens in the chicken coop, beef came and was put in the freezer. Fresh harvested vegetables and fruit are canned in pretty jars. The farm itself was cozy and warm in the winter, the stillness of the land at times was deafening. I remember those chintz curtains and flannel sheets she put on the bed in the winter and how they smelled because she hung them out on the line even in the winter, and the bed was so comfy you did not want to get out of it.
She made crocheted blankets and quilts, a counter in the kitchen with a line of 4 cookie jars that were the old big pickle jars. Nothing was ever thrown away or wasted. Even that old Rogers syrup can become a container for bacon grease. An old ice cream bucket you know the ones with the metal handle became a container for the fresh eggs.
In the basement there was an old wood cooking stove she kept from the old farm house that the never torn down but moved it across the road to another part of their property for a Grain storage.
You see nothing was wasted and the Can of Rogers syrup even looked pretty, a cookie tin that was filled with cookies is now being used as a sewing tin. In those days products were made to look nice, and be made to use for something else because that is how it was done in those days. I still have all her cookbooks and recipes because I love how each one of them was used and she even made her own notebooks. We rely on electronic stuff and ways to store things that are not pretty anymore and you can just throw them away.
So this is why I have made this store the way it is because I want to design products that you will use in other ways and perhaps you will hand them down to the next generation. Our lovely colourful past is going away and the lovely things we remember are being forgotten and called outdated. Well if you love vintage and lovely memories of the past made into pretty and useful things welcome.
